We’re all ready for the warmer months, and Essa is giving us a preview of summer with his new single, “The World Belongs to You.” The upbeat and sunny song comes from the UK emcee’s forthcoming album The Misadventures of a Middle Man, and features production by Ta-Ku. Listen to the song below, and check out a preview video that features footage from Essa’s shows in China, Australia and at the Soundwave Croatia Festival. The single also includes another Ta-Ku-produced track, “Call Me Essa,” which is only available on this single.
Today is Dilla Day in which the world, and Detroit especially, pays tribute to the legendary Hip Hop producer J Dilla. In his honor and to pay tribute to J Dilla, Slum Village has dropped the first single, “Yes Yes,” from their forthcoming (and thus far untitled) LP, which will drop this Spring, and will feature production from the late Jay Dee. Check it out below.
Emcee John Robinson (also known as Lil Sci of Scienz of Life) and producer PVD (Pat Van Dyke) have recorded an album of vintage boom bap with a modern twist: live instruments. The album is called Modern Vintage. In the video below, the duo gives a preview of the first single, “Off the Wall,” and a brief look into PVD’s studio. (more…)
Death is often used as a metaphor for change so perhaps Donwill and Von Pea are lamenting life’s more difficult transitions in their new single and video, “Eulogy.” The song is produced by 6th Sense, as is the album Rubber Souls, which is out now. Check out the video for “Eulogy” by Tanya Morgan below.
7 Days of Funk may be the most obvious, and at the same time surprising, collaboration we’ve seen: Dam-Funk and Snoop Dogg.
From Stones Throw Records: “The King of Modern Funk meets the smoked-out scion of G-Funk on the 7 Days of Funk album, where Snoop performs under the name Snoopzilla, the homage to the legendary funk master, Bootsy Collins, who often went by the moniker Bootzilla.”
The album will be the first one producer / one rapper record for Snoop since Doggystyle. Snoop says: “We’re the babies of the Mothership. I’ve had funk influences in my music my whole career. Dam-Funk is cold. He’s keeping the funk alive and I knew I had to get down with him.”
Listen below to the sounds of G-Funk colliding with Modern Funk on the single, “Faden Away.” And look for 7 Days of Funk to drop on December 10.
