Mark de Clive-Lowe is collaborating with the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra to deliver a big band album called Take The Space Trane. As a preview, Mark has shared the title track. He says the song “is a melding of the ‘60s Coltrane and McCoy Tyner feel with a UK brukstep rhythm – the avant-garde aspects of the jazz tradition head to head with the driving pulse of the beats… The title is a play on Duke Ellington’s big band classic ‘Take The A Train,’ but with the modal jazz influences a la John Coltrane and undercurrent of beats and electronic elements, it just made sense to be ‘Take The Space Trane!’”
“Future Ancestors” is the newest single from Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra, and it comes from the group’s second album, Towards Other Worlds. The 7-piece Arkestra from the UK lay down a foundation of Afrobeat, and then heat it up even further with jazzy brass parts on “Future Ancestors” and funk/soul guitar and organ on “Get on the Floor”.
Hidden Orchestra: even more cinematic and orchestral than Cinematic Orchestra?
Archipelago is the new album from Hidden Orchestra, out now on Tru Thoughts (out tomorrow in the US). Hidden Orchestra is a quartet including dueling drum kits, percussion and electronic pads by two drummers, Tim Lane and Jamie Graham, violin and piano by Poppy Ackroyd, and bass and original samples by Joe Acheson. Check out the mini-mix for a preview of the album, or learn more right here.
Out now on Leisure Lab is the newest Future Soul release from producer Zane Tate. The song is called “El Tiempo es Circular,” and features vocals by Aline Esquivel and bass by Alex Bershadsky.
Zane delivers a mix of Nu Jazz and House in the track with a four-on-the-floor rhythm under lush Rhodes chords and synth stabs. Renowned Jazz and Fusion bassist Alex Bershadsky holds down the bottom end with a bass line that is both driving and melodic. And Aline’s vocals float over the groove as she sings, “El tiempo es circular. La música no acaba jamás (Time goes in circles. Music is never ending)”
Andy Compton has mixed Jazz, Nu Jazz, some Chill Out, and of course Deep House to come up with his new album Kholofelo. The LP is Comption’s first solo release after having produced Deep House music for more than fifteen years with his group The Rurals. Andy Compton’s Kholofelo drops May 24th, but it’s already receiving positive feedback. Osunlade calls it a “good album full of sweet soulful tunes.”
